Henry Ford said "there is joy in work" and Wyomissing physician Dr. Brian K. Reedy can testify to that sentiment. A native of the Harrisburg area, he has been practicing – and raising his family – in Berks since completing his medical training at the University of Pennsylvania in 1998. A founding partner of Berks Plastic Surgery, Reedy has an entrepreneurial talent that has led to successful collaborations with Lords and Ladies salons throughout the region and, most recently, Chatty Monks Brewing Company in West Reading. He and his wife Sarah are the proud parents of sons Connor and Liam and young daughter Charlotte.
Q: How did you come to Berks County?
I grew up in Harrisburg and my wife is from Allentown. We were in Philadelphia for 11 years as I went to school and finished studying medicine; when I was done I interviewed up and down the east coast but we wanted to be near family. I met Pam Ellenberger, a fellow doctor who retired five years ago, and we partnered up. It’s worked out really well; we are very happy here and I’ve been able to build a big city practice in a pastoral setting, which is the best of both worlds.
Q: The practice has grown a lot since the late 90s, hasn’t it?
Yes, I have a new associate, Dr. Scott Lindsay. We have 45 employees, including nurse practitioners, a pathologist and aestheticians. Terry Derr of Lords and Ladies spas and I have worked together for years to provide medical-grade skincare. It’s been a fabulous partnership, with both of us doing what we do best; it’s wonderful synergy.
Q: You’ve also taken on a new project with Chatty Monks. How did that come about?
I met two of the partners, Rob Metzger and Norm Eaton, when our kids played football together. We’d get together and they’d bring the best home brew to gatherings. I told them to do something with it – to think bigger, dream bigger. Chatty Monks has been wildly successful in just the first year. It’s been fun; there are four partners. I do the marketing and branding, and Sarah and I enjoyed designing the place. People have really accepted the Chatty Monks brand and beers; we’re two to three years ahead of our business plan and are now entering the commercial beer arena.
Q: And you’ve also appeared on The Doctors TV talk show, right?
Yes. Last year a local patient with severe acne scarring contacted the show for help. The producers approached me to treat her and appear in that initial episode. I agreed because helping people is why I became a doctor – and treatment can have such a transformative impact on patients’ lives. We’ve been filming all during her treatment, which she’s finished very successfully. The big reveal takes place on the show, which is filmed in L.A.; it’s very exciting, but the best part is the patient is very happy. That’s what matters most.
Q: Making patients happy seems to be a key to your happiness too.
It definitely is. I’m happy helping people and giving them unique, positive experiences. I feel so lucky to be able to do that. And I know I’m lucky to have had 25 years with my beautiful wife and to have great kids that I’ve been able to coach in sports. I’ve been able to do what I love, be home each night for family dinners, and take wonderful family trips; I am happy.
