Summer officially kicks off this month and is the perfect time to get outdoors and enjoy all nature has to offer. A great place to do it in Berks is at Blue Marsh Lake and Recreation Area.
And there’s truly something for everyone. Recreation spots typically open at 8am and close around dusk. If you’re new to Blue Marsh, the Visitor’s Center is a great starting point, overlooking the tower and dam, and giving an overview of the lake area.
At the Dry Books Day Use area, there is a swim beach, but it is swim-at-your-own-risk as there are no staffed lifeguards. Picnic tables are aplenty too, and public restrooms are available. So pack a lunch to enjoy during your stay!
Want to get out on the water? Enjoy one of three boat launches: Dry Brooks, State Hill and Sheidy (operated by the PA Fish and Boat Commission and requiring the proper state permits).
Fishing enthusiasts will want to head to the Stilling Basin, where water is release from the dam, and the location of a universally-accessible fishing platform. The area is especially known for trout fishing.
Blue Marsh is also home to an extensive trail system. A multi-use trail loop is recognized as a National Recreation Trail and can be used for hiking, biking and horse riding. For geocaching enthusiasts, the Tulpehocken Creek Valley Geo Trail, developed in partnership with the Berks County Parks and Recreation Department, 20 caches can be uncovered along the Tulpehocken Creek and around Blue Marsh Lake.
A special “Get Outdoors Day” will be held on June 10 from 10am to 3pm at the Dry Brooks Day Use Area. Admission is free. For more info, visit nap.usace.army.mil/bluemarsh or call 610.374.2944.
