Reading-born Deana L. Barcz has a passion for people, business and Berks County. Accustomed to wearing many hats — and wearing them well — she owns her own professional advising firm, Barcz Life & Business Coaching, and is a founder and co-owner of Epiphany Life Spa, both in Wyomissing. When she’s not helping companies succeed, the Muhlenberg Township resident might be found following her adventurous spirit with her husband, Jared Barcz, president of The Home Artisan Group, Reading, or having fun with their toddler nephew Jenson, their cat Bagheera and their new puppy Zeus.
Q | Are you a Berks County native?
Yes, I was born and raised here. We lived in the city when I was a child and I attended 13th and Green [elementary school], then we moved to the country. I graduated from Schuylkill Valley High School, my degree is from Alvernia University and I’m certified in business coaching. I have lived in Albany and Philadelphia but feel a special connection to this area. We have wonderful friends here, and there is a lot of talent in Berks. Whether it’s good food, music or an event, there is always something to do here. When my husband and I decided to build our businesses, we wanted to do it here and be part of developing something positive within our community.
Q | Speaking of your businesses, how did you get into coaching?
I’ve been surrounded by business all my life. Growing up, my dad and grandfather built their business. My husband built his. I’ve been a part of several start-ups, including the creation of entire training programs for businesses. I have a background in management, training, marketing and psychology. When I considered building my own firm, I discovered that coaching marries my two favorite focuses: business and psychology. I enjoy working with people who are motivated to achieve their goals and create their futures. I am a partner to and advocate for my clients, helping them create a proactive strategy and leadership style that guides and inspires a team.
Q | Do you have a favorite aspect of your job?
When you start your own company, your heart is in it. While I mostly work with companies who have already reached a level of success and want more, I also enjoy working with companies who have sort of a dysfunctional family situation. It happens. I like to help them get beyond that, so everyone can enjoy going to work without tension or issues that get in the way of the company achieving its goals.
Q | It sounds like you love your work, but you must have other passions, too. So, in your off-time, what’s fun?
My husband and I love outdoor activities like kayaking, whitewater rafting and camping — though not in a tent anymore! I also enjoy cooking and learning new recipes.
Q | Whitewater rafting can be risky, which may surprise some, considering your work as a calm, expert voice. Is there something else about you that might surprise people?
Along with my college roommate and one of my oldest friends, I travelled around the U.S., going through most of the states. I was amazed at how much there was to see in our country — so much beyond what we learn in school.
Q | That sounds like a great trip. Staying closer to home, what’s your idea of a perfect day off?
In the summer, it’s at the pool. During the cold months, it’s a great meal and great company. When I am not working, I want to be with my family and friends.
Q | What makes Berks a good fit for your company?
There are not many professionals in our community who offer what I do. It makes me extremely happy to help our communities’ businesses become stronger.
