I enjoy searching for clothing and accessories at Berks County Goodwill Keystone Area stores. I’ve found everything from Michael Kors, Tory Burch and Marc Jacobs designer brands to J. Crew and Banana Republic. My favorite things to look for are premium denim, vintage jewelry and seasonal jackets. My friends ask how I get so “lucky” to discover these fashion treasures, but there are no tricks, just some tips!
1. Visit often!
If you only have an hour, focus on one area, such as blouses, accessories or shorts.
2. Try different stores.
Venture out of your neighborhood and make a day of shopping new thrift stores.
3. Shop with a friend.
When I style friends for my blog, some are shocked when they like something they would have never thought of wearing.
4. Check the return racks — especially by the dressing rooms.
Someone else’s discard may be your treasure!
5. Keep a wish list.
Make a list of items you’d love to find — a little black dress, a designer bag, cowboy boots, etc.
6. Touch the fabrics.
Premium denim and 100 percent wool, cotton or silk will feel different than synthetic blends. These are higher quality items. I can quickly sort through a rack by feeling the fabrics and looking at labels.
7. Try on different sizes.
After an item has been worn and washed it may shrink or stretch, so you may fit into other sizes. And some things look entirely different on you than on a hanger.
8. Shop during peak hours.
It may be crowded, but as racks empty out, new merchandise will be added.
9. Walk away if necessary.
You may not always find something.
10. Return the favor!
For every piece you take home, donate something you don’t wear. Editing your wardrobe will help streamline your morning routine.
