In support of their initiative “Healthy Choices, Healthy Kids,” the Junior League of Reading, Pa., Inc., will hold its 3rd Annual Holiday Kitchen Tour on Dec. 2 from 1 to 5pm.
The self-guided tour will feature an inside look at traditional and contemporary kitchen designs by some of the finest kitchen companies in Berks County homes. Advance tickets are $25, or $30 the day of the event. Tickets are available online at jlreading.org, at Pollack Furs and Bella Jules in West Reading, and at Auto Spa of Wyomissing.
Profits from the tour benefit the Junior League’s “Healthy Choices, Healthy Kids” initiative, focused on helping children engage in healthy lifestyle choices through education and opportunities. To that end, one home on the tour will be designated the “Kids in the Kitchen” house. At the home, there will be two food demonstrations, each focused on making healthy holiday snacks for families. Guests can sample holiday goodies along the tour and leave with some great recipes to make and enjoy in their own homes.
“The Junior League of Reading’s members feel that the heart of many homes is the kitchen. It often becomes a central place for gathering with family and friends, sharing special times, and creating lasting memories, especially during the winter holiday season. Since the kitchen is where choices about food and nutrition begin, this tour is the perfect opportunity to share our commitment to improving the health of our youth with others,” says Junior League President Christi Terefenko.

Current programming of the initiative includes a Young Women’s Summit, which offers at-risk girls the opportunity to recognize and develop their potential as leaders in their own communities. Additionally, the Junior League offers after-school programming at Glenside Elementary with a focus on nutrition education as well as physical activity. Glenside is also the site of a Junior League sponsored school garden, which encourages families to become active participants in the learning process and more personally engaged in nutrition education.
