For customers who want to share their favorite Firehouse blends, Mike offers his coffees in gift baskets. If merch is more your thing, you can join the “Bean Team” with a t-shirt. Helping Harvest Food Bank

In times of need, Helping Harvest wins the top award for successfully adapting to the increased demands of the community. According to President Jay Worral, the workers of Helping Harvest are able to “serve 125,000 clients in Berks and Schuylkill counties by providing food to be distributed to those families through pantries, soup kitchens, homeless shelters and other organizations.” Over the course of the past six months, in excess of $1 million worth of food was provided to households throughout Reading — a significant change from the $7,000 dollars a month prior to the pandemic. Increasing needs come with more opportunities for volunteering, says Worral. Three ways to assist are through financial donations, physically packing of food in the warehouse and at mobile markets. — Elizabeth Churchill

BEST VEGAN/VEGETARIAN OPTION

The Greenhouse Café

Another year, another win! This marks the third year the Greenhouse Café has been open, as well as the third year they have brought home the win for this award. Co-owner Uday Shah says the restaurant’s mission is “to share our plant-based lifestyle that we live and have with people, and to create flavorful dishes.” Even meat eaters won’t be disappointed as Shah, laughing, adds, “When we ask customers if they miss the meat, they say ‘no.’” The Greenhouse Café sets itself apart by creating dishes from scratch with original recipes that are constantly being refined, like their hummus, which one dairy farmer calls “the creamiest hummus ever.” Co-owner Nikki Motichka hopes to continue innovating and expanding, to “make [vegan food] accessible for people who want a more plant-based diet.” — Michael Thomas

BEST KIDS' MENU (NON-CHAIN)

Berkshire Family Restaurant

Most parents hate the words, “I don’t know” at dinnertime, but they can avoid them at Berkshire Family Restaurant, a two-time winner in this category. Their kids’ menu is any picky eater’s dream, consisting of meals like the “I don’t care,” a grilled cheese with French fries, or the “I’d rather starve,” a bowl of mac and cheese. The restaurant cares about affordability as well, with meals ranging from $4.99 to $6.99, including a meal, drink and even dessert. “We named the dishes after what parents would hear their kids say,” says Manager Allyson LaRocca, and some names were inspired by owner Manny Vlastos’ children. The yummy entrees and affordability have families coming back for more. Children under 10 years of age love stating the names of the dishes because it makes them laugh every time. — Autumn M. Horger
