Nan’s Perfect Pre-Baked Apple Pie Filling
Recipe from Nan Reinert, Chubby Pickle Farm
Yields enough filling for one pie. Before filling the freezer bag, use a Sharpie to note the baking instructions.
Thaw filling prior to transferring to your pie pan for baking.
Ingredients
- 6-7 tart apples, peeled, seeds removed and sliced
- 3/4 cup sugar
- 2 Tbsp flour
- 1/2 tsp lemon juice
- 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/8 tsp ground nutmeg
- 1/8 tsp salt
- 2 Tbsp butter, for baking
Instructions
- In a large bowl combine the apple, sugar, flour, lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt.
- Transfer the apple filling to a gallon-size freezer bag or container. If using a bag, be sure to remove all air before sealing. If using a container, be sure there is no room for excess air. Freeze the filling.
- To prepare the pie or crumble, put thawed filling in a 9-inch pasty lined pie pan, dot with butter, top with crust of your choice and bake for 400ºF for 50 minutes or until golden.
