If you know Nan Reinert of local Chubby Pickle Farms, then you know she is passionate about clean living. It’s not just about wholesome foods, but also a chemical-free home.
In a recent 2 Weird Hungry Girls podcast episode, it was all about fall cleaning tips with Nan and a cocktail or two. The Sparkle and Bubbles podcast episode covers the use of vinegar or vodka, tips to prevent stink bugs, scented laundry, and clean sinks. There may have been talk about cocktails, but I already mentioned that.
Nan said there are basics you can have on-hand to start swapping chemical-based cleaners for more natural and less expensive alternatives.
Her list of cleaning must-haves includes:
- Vinegar
- Olive oil
- Lemon juice
- Baking soda
- Castile soap
- Salt
- Essential oils (tea tree, lemon, clove, peppermint are a good start)
And here’s one you can whip up from me…
Scented Carpet Freshener
I mix a large batch in one of those bulk herb containers to sprinkle in the carpet from time to time. I use blend of lavender, lemon and rosemary essential oils because it's a scent I prefer, but you can experiment with what you like.
- 1 cup baking soda
- 30 drops of essential oil
Combine the baking soda and essential oil in a small mixing bowl. Stir until combined then store in an airtight container.
Sprinkle on the carpet and allow to rest 30 minutes. Vacuum up the freshener.
Enjoy this episode and tips with a bubbly cocktail (we did). Find the cocktail recipe in a previous Phoebe Savors Berks, Berks County Living Style post.
Happy Cleaning!
