ABCs of Summer Skin Care

ABCs of Summer Skin Care
By: That's Something, That's Something June 2012

Recently Berks County Living had the pleasure of sponsoring a special Women2Women event at Advanced Skin Care & LASER Center in Wyomissing. The event was titled “Summer is coming! Is your skin ready?”

Dr. Harriet Comite, Berks County’s first female dermatologist and only Cosmetic Board Certified dermatologist in the region, led an open discussion on the importance of summer skin care, including hazards, precautions and remedies. Did you know aspirin should be taken prior to sun exposure for prevention and after exposure to relieve symptoms and discomfort? It’s true! Guess what I’m adding to my beach bag?! Following the discussion, we broke into small groups and toured the facility, meeting with various staff members including RNs, Aestheticians & Laser Techs. I was amazed at how much I learned at the event about my very own skin…including that I wasn’t ready for summer…until now, that is!

I thought you might enjoy a few of the tips I learned at the event, thanks to Dr. Comite. To prevent sun damage, know your ABCs:

Avoid – Stay away from the sun. Find shade. Be outdoors when the sun is less damaging, before 10 AM or after 3 PM.

Block – Use a broad-spectrum physical sunblock, SPF 30 or higher, containing micronized Zinc or Titanium that protects against both UVA and UVB rays. Re-apply sun block after swimming, sweating or wiping down with a towel.  Sun block should be used EVERY DAY.  Exposure to damaging rays even occurs on cloudy days, actually causing worse burns than on clear days.

Sunblock should be used wherever skin is exposed.  Don’t forget your lips, ears, neck, hands and the top of your feet.

Cover-Up – Wear sun-protective clothing, such as a vented long sleeve shirt and hat with a wide brim.  Many women will only protect their face, but not their neck, chest or hands, which leads to having a youthful face and other body parts that look 20 years older.

Sunglasses with UVA and UVB protective lenses are also vitally important to reduce the risk of cataracts.

Thanks Dr. Comite for sharing!
