This year marks the 24th annual Berks Earth Day celebration featuring tons of eco-friendly fun and games. The event will begin at 11:30am and conclude at 7pm on April 21 at Riverfront Park in Reading. The celebration will be combined with Reading Beautification’s Great American Clean-up, an annual citywide clean up aimed at reducing litter from the City’s streets.
This free event, hosted by Berks County Earth Day Committee, will offer up live entertainment including diverse musical styles, educational workshops, a children’s tent filled with earth-friendly games and much more.
A big environmental change this year sees the Committee utilizing green-energy technologies made possible by teaming up with Berks Solar, Deka Batteries and Recycling Services. One example of this comes in the form of “people-powered” energy generators. The generators will provide attendees with first-hand experience of the realistic uses of green energy. Some of these generators take the form of bicycles, treadmills and elliptical machines intended for generating power. The machines will recharge the Deka Batteries used to power the event, reducing the energy used for the day.
The event will begin at 11:30am and conclude at 7pm on April 21 at Riverfront Park in Reading.
Those attending will enjoy learning experiences such as how to incorporate Earth-friendly activities into their daily routine through methods like recycling. Students in grades 5 through 8 can enter a poetry contest and win a cash prize. Also featured will be a resource recovery station, providing information on waste reduction and reducing environmental footprints through composting and recycling.
Concession stands on site will include: Island Noodles, Johnny’s Pizza, Good Eatz Green Café and more. Parking is available at Reading Area Community College. For more information, visit earthdayberks.org.
