Participants should bring a pair of sharp scissors. Penny rugs are a decorative wool "rug" or mat that was used as an area rug or to decorate surfaces in the 19th century. Historical reference tend to point to the majority of these rugs dated to after 1850. These decorative items were very common in PA German areas and spoke to the thrift of using up scraps or leftover materials. The top layer of circle shapes or "pennies" were traced from actual coins which were bigger during this time. Wool is the traditional material used for these rugs.
