Five Local Children’s Authors & Books

Connect with the children in your life and let their imaginations soar. Read together and discover exciting new stories. Spend time with these five books written by talented local authors. Enter fantastic worlds, meet amazing characters, and participate in thought-provoking discussions. Show the next generation how to make reading a life-long goal.

1. Rhyme Time.

Travel the globe with Bongo the Antelope as he searches for the perfect new home. Journey through a colorful, whimsical world where animals and humans live as equals. Meet wonderful friends like Dottie J. and Lulu the Shih-Tzu (named after the author’s own dog), and learn healthy eating habits from Bongo. My Antelope Likes Cantaloupe by Kimmie Fetters, illustrated by Derik Fetters, Gypsyheart, 2015, $25, Firefly Bookstore, 271 W. Main St., Kutztown, 484.648.2712. fireflybookstore.com

2. Through Her Eyes.

Experience a day in the life of Monroe Edwards and read about her favorite things. Written by Monroe and her mother, this story teaches young children about autism. Start a conversation with your child about compassion and empathy. Learn what makes Monroe special, and see how being different is good. Get to Know Monroe by Sheena and Monroe Edwards, illustrated by Marina Saumell, Team Monroe Publishing, 2016, $9.99, amazon.com

3. Natural Wonders.

Experience the joys of nature and see the world in new ways. Poetic text is accompanied by cheerful illustrations, making this book a fun read-aloud for young children. Take it to the park or your own backyard and get inspired to make some outdoor discoveries of your own. Mudpies and Fireflies by Lindsey Koppenheffer, illustrated by Megan Shoemaker, CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, 2018, $15, amazon.com

4. Positive Message.

Beckett Barnes has a problem: a new student at school is being a bully. Fortunately, his family offers guidance and empowers him to create his own solution. Learn the importance of kindness with this chapter book, perfect for independent readers, or for parents and children to read together. It’s Cool to Be Kind by Linnea McFadden, illustrated by Ayanami Monreal, Linnea B. McFadden, 2017, $6.99, amazon.com

5. Life Lessons.

Twins Johnny and Jay learn to spend, save and share by placing money in three jars. One is for giving, one is for toys, and one is savings for long-term goals. Kids as young as three and four can learn money management in the first book of this exciting series. The Giving Jar by Lisa A. Werley, illustrated by Ronda Lee Seymour, Johnny Jay Books, 2016, $12.99, Firefly Bookstore, 271 W. Main St., Kutztown, 484.648.2712. fireflybookstore.com
