Five Awesome Apple Things

We love a good standby, and the scent of apples in the autumn air is a dependable harbinger of the crisp season ahead. This year, explore new ways to enjoy the American classic in the fields, on the road, and in the comfort of your own home.

1| Smashing success.

Served up chilled or warm and spicy on a brisk fall day, it's easy to see why this orchard-fresh cider has been winning over fans and earning accolades for 40 years. Each bottle blends at least six varieties of apples to create the perfect tart, sweet and aromatic flavor. Apple cider, $1.45-$6, sold in pint, half gallon or gallon jug, Ontelaunee Orchards, 1460 W. Leesport Rd., Leesport, through Oct. 31 or 5524 Pottsville Pike, Leesport, year-round, 610.926.2187. twin-o.com

2 | Fragrant fruit.

Get a whiff of this: layers of sliced apple and warm candied walnuts make the whole house smell like a fresh-baked delight. The perfect complement for a sophisticated night in, sipping a Riesling and nibbling a cheese platter. Apple & Candied Walnut candle from the Wine Pairings collection, $9.99-$24.99 for various sizes, Yankee Candle at The Shoppes at Wyomissing, 758 Woodland Rd., Reading, 610.236.1013. yankeecandle.com

3 | Crank it up.

Take some of the toil and trouble out of prepping apples with this baker's little helper. A suctioned base creates a solid bond with your countertop. Simply attach an apple and let the machine do most of the work of peeling and coring. Fox Run Apple Peeling Machine, $19.99, Reading China & Glass at the VF Outlets, 739 Reading Avenue, West Reading, 610.378.0413. kitchenandcompany.com

4 | Travelin' tart.

Grammy's famous apple pie recipe should be enjoyed by the masses. Just pop your fresh-baked masterpiece in this plastic carrier and snap on the lid. Special vent holes keep heat from building up and release a heavenly aroma to accompany you on your journey. Sweet Creations Pie Carrier, $11.99, Bed, Bath & Beyond, 2771 Papermill Rd., Reading, 610.736.0433. bedbathandbeyond.com

5 | Pick a peck.

Go straight to the source for the best quality produce and choose from more than 30 varieties of crisp, delicious apples as they ripen throughout the growing season. Load up a peck (10 pounds) or a half-bushel (that's 20) Monday through Saturday throughout September and October. Pick-your-own apples, $18-$26, in 10- or 20-pound bags with weekday and member discounts available, Weaver's Orchard Farm Market, 40 Fruit Lane, Morgantown, 610.856.7300. weaversorchard.com
