Secondhand Chic Indeed

Thursday night, April 24, the 5th Annual Goodwill Runway Show was held at The Body Zone Sports & Wellness Complex in Wyomissing, Pa. I’m not one to miss many runway shows here or elsewhere, but this was my first year attending the event.

Before the show, guests were treated to a sampling of refreshments from many of Berks County's local restaurants, grocers and cafes. During the reception when guests were mingling and browsing the Silent auction table for items to bid on, I interviewed one of the designers in the show. Leslie Galambos participated in the Re-Design Contest, a fantastic opportunity for any aspiring designer or DIY crafter to show off his or her skills. The rules of the re-design contest state that the participant must purchase an item or items at a Goodwill store and create a garment or accessory using only those items. Leslie crafted an elegant handbag from a necktie and skirt. The embellishments and closures on the bag came from a necklace and votive candle.

The Re-Design challenge kicked off the first half of the show. Contestants chose from three categories: Men’s Shirt Remix, Accessories and Avant Garde. The contestants showed imagination and skill in every garment and accessory that came down the Runway. Each entry was judged on overall originality and quality of design. BRAVO designers! You knocked it out of the park!

After a brief deliberation by the judges, the winners were announced and presented on stage with their designs.

The second half of the runway show highlighted current inventory from Goodwill’s retail stores. Models walked the runway in a variety of outfits styled by committee members and local fashionistas in styles from casual to evening wear. It was amazing to see many of the most current fashion trends represented in each look. There were great pieces that I was eyeing up during the show in the hopes of snagging a few of these gently used designer finds at a fraction of their original retail price. Being the seasoned shopper that I am, I was indeed able to score numerous amazing finds for a whopping $27 TOTAL!

It was great to see so many people express their creative side while joining to benefit the Goodwill Keystone organization. Goodwill Keystone supports individuals with disabilities, as well as those faced with economic disadvantages. They provide the necessary education, training and skills to help build self-confidence, aiding those who need the organization in becoming independent members of society. The Goodwill Runway Show is the organization's largest fundraiser. All proceeds from the event help continue funding for the many programs and life-changing services the organization provides for the community.

I cannot think of a better way to give back to the community than by SHOPPING!
