A Baker’s Dozen of Baked Goods and Coffee Creations

Sometimes a hot cup of coffee and a home-baked goodie is all you need to warm the soul. We’ve rounded up a few you can find right here in Berks County. Check them out.

1. Marisol’s Bakery & Café, Temple

Head here for some pastries to share! Opened three years ago, the spot features traditional Puerto Rican pastries, desserts, custom cakes and treats. Grab their popular pastry tray to share with your officemates before heading into work or for a treat during a meeting. Offerings include a traditional quesito (pastry dough filled with homemade cream cheese filling and topped with honey glaze), guava pastry and polvorones (a melt-in-your-mouth thumbprint cookie).

2. Café Folino, Wyomissing

Stop inside this Italian-inspired café that’s quickly captured the hearts of locals. At Café Folino, a passion for coffee and exceptional food is fueled by a desire to provide patrons with a cozy and delightful experience. Offered is an exclusive blend of Café Folino roasted coffee you won’t find anywhere else. Try their signature cappuccino for a perfect balance of robust espresso, creamy steamed milk and a dollop of velvety foam. Pair it with their Italian croissant, baked fresh on site and filled with Nutella.

3. Malizzi Cakes & Pastries, Douglassville

Are cupcakes your favorite? They’re among the most popular offerings at this family-owned-and-operated business. Pick up a mix-and-match box to enjoy with family and friends. Every weekend the shop offers six different gourmet flavors (of 250!) like PB&J, lemon blueberry and maple bacon, and five standards, including vanilla, confetti, chocolate chip, chocolate and chocolate peanut butter. Which would you choose?

4. Wyomissing Restaurant and Bakery, Wyomissing

Check out their made-from-scratch bakery where everything is created in house, including the famed Challah bread, which is also used for the French Toast at breakfast. There’s a reason why Wyomissing Restaurant and Bakery has earned awards from Berks County Living, the Reading Eagle and Clipper Magazine readers.

5. Reading Coffee Company, Birdsboro

Specializing in roasting small-batch artisan coffee each and every day, dozens of varieties are available from around the world, including single-origin and micro-lot offerings for enthusiasts. Pick up their best-selling medium roast, Jazzy Java, flavored with cinnamon, pecans, chestnuts and rum. It’s available in decaffeinated and single-serve K-cups, too.

6. The Cottage Bakery & Café, Kutztown

Baked from scratch with wholesome ingredients, this relative newcomer to Kutztown is a go-to place for delectable sticky buns. Says a fan on Facebook, “Let me tell you — I walked into this small, unassuming bakery in the heart of Kutztown and was absolutely blown away. Everything was flawless. From the moment I walked in the door I was greeted with a hearty smile and a cacophony of wonderful bakery items.”

8. Firehouse Coffee, Maxatawny

Voted Best of Berks for coffee for two years running, Firehouse Coffee is owned by Mike Adams, a local first responder who has worked on the local MedEvac helicopter for the last 33 years. The brand starts with passion, and fans are surely passionate about bestsellers Trauma Mama, featuring wild rum and caramel coffee, and C.P.R., the Colombian Premium Roast.

9. Four Twelve, Hamburg

In Hamburg you’ll find this cozy coffee shop featuring a bakery case filled with goodies from Cake Pros as well as standard and specialty coffees. During the month of February, try the special Raspberry White Chocolate Latte. Four Twelve uses Passenger Coffee beans. 10. Brakeman’s Café, Boyertown

Brakeman’s is known for its cozy fireplace. Situated in a 100-year-old carriage house across from the Colebrookdale Railroad in Boyertown, it's the best place to stop in for their most popular drink: a nitro fusion. The cold brew concoction includes caramel drizzle around the cup, nitro cold brew and your choice of cream. The food menu at Brakeman’s changes seasonally as it is a scratch kitchen, and all food and baked goods are made in house.

11. Café Sweet Street, Reading

Local icon Sweet Street Desserts can be found at this café for a quick grab-and-go delight. Aside from their famous cookies, Rice Krispies Treats, blondies and brownies, you may want to grab a delicious macaron or two, or three — we won’t judge. While you’re there, check out the discounted frozen dessert case that is a hit with fans, featuring individual desserts as well as full cakes and trays.

Explains David Backhus of this delicious spot, “There is a lot of time, love, passion and great people that make the magic happen every single day.” Stop in for a seasonal coffee with beans roasted by Tim Cone, head coffee roaster, or a treat like a homemade pop tart or cupcake from Nic Matos, a classically trained pastry chef.
