Ebony McNeil founded The Forge in January 2021 to help men become better men. Since its founding, The Forge is growing quickly and providing an avenue for men to uplift each other and their community.
Q: Tell me more about The Forge’s mission of helping men become better men.
The Forge is based on three pillars: positive imagery (a positive image of masculinity, not something that is toxic and doesn’t allow men to express themselves), quality fellowship (connecting men with men who will help them grow) and service (we believe all men can be leaders regardless of job title, but leadership starts with service because you learn to be humble and uplift others).
Q: How does the group achieve its mission?
We have monthly Forge Forums where we help men tackle issues like leadership, accountability, conflict resolution, anger management, self-care and more. Men don’t often express themselves, and we want them to know it’s okay to be vulnerable and to admit they’re not okay. The discussions at the forums do this. We also have a professional men’s clothing drive to collect suits and dress clothing for men in the community to help them make a good first impression for job interviews and other important events. Men in the group also engage in community service; for example, we have block clean-ups, donations to women’s shelters, and we organized a COVID-19 vaccine drive. Last April, we also hosted a Father & Son Brunch with motivational speakers and what I call “maturation stations” where local businesses and business owners taught men about different skills they need as they mature. They learned things like car basics, financial basics, grooming and even how to tie a tie.
Q: Can any man join The Forge?
Yes, we are open to any man age 16 and older. No man is excluded. One of our forum strengths is having men from many different demographics connect and learn from each other. You may be from different demographics, but you learn you share similar struggles and you can help each other. Also, the forums are free to attend.
Q: What new things are on the horizon for The Forge?
In 2023, I plan to host a podcast, The Forge Focus, and interview people who will discuss the topics I mentioned earlier and other topics to help men’s holistic development. We also want to have a leadership academy for young men and a mentorship program.
Q: The Forge definitely keeps you busy. When you get some downtime, how do you relax and have fun?
I couldn’t do any of the things I do without my amazing wife, but between our jobs, The Forge and our four sons, we’re very busy; however, we make it a point to have monthly date nights and family time on the weekends. I also coach my kids’ sports teams.
