It was 1839 when Frederick Henninger founded Henninger Funeral Home, Inc. with his Uncle Frederick Haberaker who had an established cabinet and undertaking business in Reading at that time. Today, the funeral business is owned by Robert R. Nye and his wife Melissa in the Callowhill Historic District of Reading. Robert is the grandson of John H. Henninger, Jr. and Marguerite Henninger.
A seventh-generation business, Henninger Funeral Home, Inc. also employs Joanne Henninger Nye as treasurer.
When original founder Frederick’s health brought on his retirement, his brother, Charles, opened his own business in Reading. The third brother to enter the business was John R., who once owned a shoe business. John's son, Hunter, was later taken into the business as a partner. Hunter took over the business interest in 1890 upon the death of his father. It was Hunter who purchased the property on 229 North 5th St., the current location of the mortuary.
Henninger Funeral Home, Inc. was one of the first funeral homes in Pennsylvania to install a crematory, which still operates on site to this day, 178 years later. The family business offers traditional funeral services, cremation and green funeral services.
What makes Henninger different? The family prides itself on its traditional values, diversity and innovation in honoring the spirit and life of each person it serves following the ideals of the founders.
