Something Old

Symbolic of continuity, this something is a great way for a bride to connect with her family or the past.

    • Use pieces of your mother’s or grandmother’s wedding gown and incorporate them into your dress, your headpiece or your garter.
    • Family heirlooms are perfect for a day like this. Use a family Bible or your family’s crystal toasting flutes for this momentous occasion.
    • Wrap a vintage handkerchief that belongs to someone special in your family around the base of your bouquet.  It provides the perfect foundation for your flowers and your future.
    • Find two pennies, one with the year you were born and one with the year your husband-to-be was born. Place one in each of your shoes.  Not only does it fulfill the something old, it will bring you luck, too (just be sure they’re face-up)!

Something New

Offering optimism of the future, something new signifies the life that lies ahead for the bride.

    • Choose a new wedding gown sash to add to your dress. Hand-selected by you is the quintessential new.
    • A new pair of wedding shoes is the perfect way to not only walk down the aisle, but also to walk right into a new life.
    • Unmentionables are worth mentioning when you buy them especially for your special day. Luxe lingerie is a pretty way to incorporate something new.
    • Soon you will have new initials, so have these new letters engraved in a locket so you can keep them close to your heart.

Something Borrowed

Signifying the importance of family and friends being a part of your big day, something borrowed demonstrates borrowed happiness. But don’t forget, something borrowed must be returned after your wedding day.

    • Wear a former bride’s veil on your wedding day. Sharing your big days will bring more happiness to yours.
    • See if your future mother-in-law or sister-in-law has a vintage handbag or clutch that you can use. It is a lovely way to incorporate your new family into your tradition.
    • Take the cake and use a knife that was used by a family member to cut his or her wedding cake to cut your wedding cake. Or use a vintage cake stand to display your wedding day sweets.
    • Borrow a charm or a memento from a close friend or family member and hook it onto your bouquet as you walk down the aisle.

Something Blue

Representing purity, loyalty and fidelity, the final something is a nod to the things to come in a marriage.

  • It’s a day to remember, so have the date saved on a piece of blue ribbon that is sewn into your wedding dress. Or simply have a small blue heart hand-stitched into your gown by someone important to you.
  • Put your best foot forward with this wedding tradition and have your toes painted blue. It’s the perfect touch for this wedding day something.
  • Place a subtle blue flower in your bridal bouquet or in your hair. Just a hint of the blue hue will be the perfect way to show your loyalty to the groom.
  • Sparkle and shine with small blue earrings. They’ll be the perfect complement to your smile that day.
