And the Winner of the 2024 Wiener Dog Race Will Be….?
Saucony Creek Brewing Company Highlights Hoppy, Happy Oktoberfest
Saucony Creek Brewing Company + Gastropub is big on celebrating Oktoberfest the proper way—in September, as is customary in German tradition. And, because it was such a blast last year, they decided to honor another German tradition—dachshunds—with a fun event called the Wiener Dog Race.
According to co-owner Kirby Powell, “We have a lot of events at Saucony, but we started this one in September of 2023, reaching out to canine ‘contestants’ with a limit of 24 registrations, and we filled up in just two weeks! Some 200 to 300 people came out to the Kutztown location for that! Watch the Facebook page or website for the next one.”
Just exactly, one wonders, how does this race work?
“Well,” says Powell, “you need two people along with their dachshund. One person is a launcher, and the other is a catcher. So, we line up five dogs at a time on the starting line to—hopefully—run 75 feet to their catcher. Usually, they run! But a few get distracted looking at all the dogs and audience,” he says, laughing.
