Brace yourself and make way — the Dreamgirls are coming to town. From Aug. 4 through 19, experience the musical phenomena of the 1960s that set the melodic stage for decades to follow! Dreamgirls, the performance, captivates its audience with both prodigious voices and exciting melodies. Transpiring in the Motown era that fostered unprecedented talents such as Aretha Franklin and Diana Ross, Dreamgirls brings both beauty and appreciation to an era of music that helped shaped songs we know and love even today. Not only does Dreamgirls pay tribute to the rise of rhythms including R&B and Motown, but the musical also celebrates the influence of African-American culture in the nation’s musical evolution. Drawing influence from the journey of Diana Ross and the Supremes, Dreamgirls features a predominantly African-American cast with three powerful black females taking stage front and center. Confronting issues of racial and gender barriers, the women powerfully tackle and confront the limitations placed on African-American women in the music industry at the time. Not only do the musical genres of Rhythm and Blues offer the audience an outstanding audible experience, but they also echo the sentiments of a marginalized voice demanding to be heard. From dynamic and commanding voices to jaw-dropping acting performances, the tinsels on the singers’ dresses won’t be the only thing shining on stage. Genesius Theatre offers a lively and enchanting performance of the headlining Broadway show, which won six Tony Awards in 1982 and later became an Oscar-winning motion picture. The Genesius production boasts a diverse cast of more than 30 talented actors, singers and dancers, recreating such musical hits as, “And, I’m Telling You,” “I Am Changing,” Hard to Say Goodbye” and “Dreamgirls.” Come experience the performance that has people talking about the show long after the curtains close. As the time-honored melody goes, “Dreamgirls will never leave you…all you got to do is dream, baby, and we’ll be there!”
