Established in 1934 to create access to quality arts instruction, the Yocum Institute for Arts Education, formerly known as the Wyomissing Institute of Fine Arts, offers extensive classes in visual arts, theater, dance and music. In addition, the Yocum Institute provides outreach programming and residencies, multi-arts and performance summer camps, an arts-based kindergarten and preschool, family-friendly productions, and a gallery space featuring emerging and local artists.
The Yocum Institute is unique in its commitment to education in and through the arts. A growing body of research points to arts education as a factor in improved test scores, critical thinking and creative problem solving. Although “The Institute” was established to offer arts instruction in the traditional sense, its vision of “Making the Arts Make a Difference” has resulted in a strong outreach network. It is one of 13 national sites for Neighborhood Bridges, a critical literacy and writing program that integrates creative writing, storytelling and the dramatic arts into the elementary school curriculum.
The Yocum Institute can be a transformational place that allows you to experiment with something new, to develop your skills, or to find encouragement from talented instructors. From toddlers to the retiree, there is something to learn here about art, creativity and yourself.
Growth and Commitment
To better accommodate the need for functional space and to meet emerging needs in the community, the Institute will be moving in June 2018 to 3000 Penn Avenue. It will feature expanded offerings for seniors, a black box theater, updated studios, great parking and a secure arts-based preschool and kindergarten.
