Susan is fairly new to our freelance team, but she’s clearly made a big impact from go. It’s no wonder. She has a wealth of experience under her belt having worked for a community newspaper for close to 20 years previously. Get to know her a bit better, here…
Q: When did you first start photographing for BCL? My very first assignment was in Jun of 2019.
Q: What do you most enjoy about your freelance work with us? After working for 18 years at the local newspaper, I wanted to keep shooting for publications and this worked out perfectly. One of my favorite aspects of photojournalism is feature stories, and I’ve shot quite a few for BCL.
Q: Tell us what photo project you most remember working on and why? I’d have to say photographing the individuals for Meet 3 Differently-Abled & Amazing Athletes. They were incredibly inspiring and I learned something different from each of them.
Q: What in your opinion makes a good photograph? I don’t want to sound corny, but capturing the person’s personality in a photo is what I notice the most in what I consider a good shot. If I leave a shoot and know that I captured the essence of a person’s personality, I am a happy photographer.
Q: What do you love about Berks County? I guess the simplest thing is that it is home and where I grew up. I lived in NYC for 14 years and the smell of the mushroom farms in Blandon always signaled I was almost home. Even if I was half asleep on the bus I knew where I was immediately. I love that it has become more diverse since I was a kid and that the arts are thriving here.
Q: What is your full-time job? I am currently self-employed and run two photography businesses; Susan L. Angstadt Photography and Susan the PETographer.
Q: What do you enjoy doing in your free time? I love to travel and photograph different cultures and cities. I enjoy spending time with my family as well as going out to a new restaurant.
Q: What are you looking forward to this holiday season? That is a loaded question since we are in the middle of a pandemic. Every year, I go to Quebec City the week before Christmas to fully experience the holiday, but this year I won’t be traveling and I’m planning to visit different cities in Pennsylvania and hopefully to see my family.
