When I told my son we were headed to the Kutztown Folk Festival, his first question was, “Are there rollercoasters?” I thought to myself, “This isn’t going to go well.”
I countered with “No, there are really no rides, but there’s a petting zoo,” hoping to ward off the complaining I thought was sure to come.
At 8 years of age and coming off his first trip to Walt Disney World where he could ride anything and everything with a height requirement, I thought entertaining the kiddo with some good ol’ fashioned fun was sure to be a challenge.
Luckily, I was wrong. We spent tons of time at the petting zoo – as I expected – and a fair amount of time with him bounding through the hay maze, but, to my surprise, there was also some interest in watching the glassblowing demonstration, checking out the arts and crafts and more.
And the food was a big hit, of course. He did have to get the staple kids meal (a hot dog) for dinner before diving into the goodies, which Riley relished, as many Festival attendees do. He enjoyed a very messy homemade ice cream in his first-ever waffle cone before returning another day (that’s right – we spent 2 days at the Festival!) and trying a sausage sandwich, Dutch fries, and capping it all off with his introduction to funnel cake. As I suspected, it was a hit.
Sure, Riley’s excited about the upcoming Reading and Kutztown fairs chalk full of carnival games and rides – but he’s also excited about the return of the Kutztown Folk Festival next year, too. Only 350 or so more days to go….
