When 97-year-old Jayne Fisher recently posed for a picture, her granddaughter, Vicki Kerns, yelled out, “Say cheese.”
“Sex,” Jayne replied.
The pair giggled at the unexpected exchange.
Laugh-out-loud moments are simply part of Fisher’s good-hearted nature and firecracker personality. She prides herself on making everyone feel welcome and comfortable, and if that means tossing in a semi-racy joke every now and then, she does.
Fisher, a retired pediatric nurse who worked at Reading Hospital for more than 23 years, shares her 5 tips for staying young and vibrant, no matter your age.
TIP #1 drink up
Fisher suggests drinking two glasses of wine each day. “My mother told me that, and I always say, 'listen to your mother.'”
TIP #2 find hobbies
Fisher is an avid gardener and enjoys writing letters to family and friends who live in faraway states. She also loves collecting photos, maps and, her favorite, Snoopy items. “It gives you something to do and look forward to.”
TIP #3 make a motto
“You gotta keep moving” is Fisher’s motto, and it helped her cope with the loss of her two children and her husband, Wes Fisher, a well-known local musician. “Especially when there is a tragedy, you gotta keep busy or you go cuckoo. You can’t just sit around.”
TIP #4 find your own style
Fisher wears cool purple-and-pink plaid Converse sneakers, passed down from her great-granddaughter who outgrew them. And she also rocks an armful of Silly Bandz, her favorite accessory. “I’m right in the loop. They [great-grandchildren] keep me young.”
TIP #5 stay active
Fisher still does her own laundry, cooking and weeding. She also handles cleaning, a task she accomplishes by cranking up Spanish music. “It works for me, and it keeps me moving.”
