Having traveled abroad to study in Ireland, I had to teach myself a thing or two about packing light. Living four months in a completely new (bone chilling) climate out of two suitcases and a backpack didn’t give me much flexibility to pack like I had for college. The key was to pack light. But what exactly does that mean?
Packing light for a vacation is the same as for an extended trip when you consider the basics. Lugging a couple of huge suitcases around your destination is not ideal, but it’s even worse when most of the stuff in there will never even make it out. Women are especially guilty of over-packing because we like to have “options.” But what’s less cute than that extra pair of heels you just HAD to pack is working up a sweat dragging all those bags through the airport! So, here are a few tips on how to keep it light for your next trip!
Be versatile
A great way to pack less clothes is to pack things that can be worn a number of different ways. This all depends on what’s in your own wardrobe, but planning a few key outfits that can be layered to give you a different look each time without needing to pack numerous things is key. Scarves, sweaters and other add-ons are great to change up your look while sacrificing little space. Shoes apply here, too. Stick to one or two pairs, maybe one comfortable and one formal that can mix-and-match with different outfits.
Make it Travel Size
Most toiletries, beauty products and lotions are all available in smaller, travel-sized containers that take up less space and are just enough to last you the trip. If you’re traveling long-term, it’ll suffice for the first couple days after your arrival and then you can always buy the necessities when you get to your destination. Also, double check if your hotel has these types of items already provided, because then you’re good to go!
One at a Time
It’s helpful to go through each item with careful scrutiny before putting it in your suitcase. Packing one item at a time gives you a chance to take a second look and decide if you really need it. Spread all your clothes out across the floor or bed before you put them in your suitcase and one-by-one, ask yourself when you’d wear it or if you actually will.
Things to Keep in Mind
Do some pre-trip research to see if the spot you’re staying at has access to laundry facilities or not. If so, your suitcase just got lighter! Don’t be afraid to re-wear clothes on your trip. All those fashion rules you may follow around your friends and coworkers don’t apply on vacation, so proudly sport that favorite tee of yours for the second day in a row. Lastly, when in doubt, leave it out! If you aren’t sure if you’ll need it, chances are you probably don’t. In other words, pack for the best case scenario, not the worst. That’s what the hotel tourist shop is for.
