This year, Advanced Skin Care, Laser & Non-Invasive Body Sculpting Center in Wyomissing began offering Emsculpt treatments.
Dr. Harriet Comite serves as lead medical, cosmetic, surgical and laser dermatologist at the center and uses Emsculpt herself, now finally having to wear a belt after years of working out at the gym six days a week but never quite being able to build the core she thought ought to be possible.
“The non-invasive HIFEM® (High-Intensity Focused Electromagnetic) technology causes super-powerful muscle contraction not achievable through voluntary contractions, like crunches or squats,” Comite explains. “SupraMaximal muscle contractions occur when motor neurons fire at their peak, which causes complete disruption of the adipose cells containing fat, permanently decreasing fat cells, which can never be replaced.”
In standard exercise or dieting, fat cells can only shrink and eventually increase in size again.
The Manufacturer
BTL Industries, Inc., based in Marlborough, MA, developed Emsculpt after its engineers worked on the project for 17 years in Prague, Czechoslovakia.
“It led to research written in a number of scientific publications, peer-reviewed by qualified physicians,” Comite confirms.
Her office also serves as a regional academic training center for visiting medical professionals who would like to learn how to use BTL’s devices.
Sculpting Sessions
Emsculpt gets its name from how it literally helps to sculpt a body, no matter what type, although it always provides its most optimal results when a person practices a healthy lifestyle.
Sessions are 30 minutes long — including six, five-minute cycles — alternating short and longer contractions through one or two electromagnetic paddle devices placed on the stomach, based on body size.
“Each session is equivalent to 20,000 abdominal crunches — or 20,000 squats, when treating the buttocks,” Comite adds. “When exposed to SupraMaximal (meaning the strength and intensity of muscle) contractions, the muscle tissue is forced to adapt to such extreme conditions. The muscle responds with a deep remodeling of its inner structure, resulting in an increase in muscle mass and fibers, building muscles, destroying fat cells, and sculpting your body. One can actually achieve '6- or 8-pack' abdominal muscles, depending on the baseline evaluation.”
Understanding Muscles & Fat
There are so many fat cells in the abdomen for a small or larger person that eliminating too many is not a concern.
“SupraMaximal muscle contractions affect the muscle in a way which you could not do voluntarily,” Comite reiterates. “When you do crunches or squats, you’re activating only about 30 to 40 percent of that muscle group every three to five seconds.”
SupraMaximal contractions activate 100 percent of the muscles 20,000 times in just half an hour.
Four treatments, two to three days apart, over two weeks is what's recommended, but more can be done.
The Numbers & Safety
Statistics from research show an average 19 percent or more permanent reduction of fat and a 16 percent or more increase in muscle thickness and muscle fibers. For the buttocks, 80 percent of patients have a visible lifting effect.
While the electromagnetic treatment is 100 percent safe, it cannot be used for anyone who has a pacemaker or metal devices of any kind in the area to be treated.
Emsculpt is non-ionizing in that it does not carry enough energy to ionize or change a cell’s structure. It emits no radiation and is non-thermal. It doesn't affect sensory nerves, as it's only designed to stimulate motor neurons in the body.

Emsculpt is an extremely safe, comfortable and effective treatment. Lactic acid is removed throughout the 30-minute treatment, so despite doing 20,000 crunches or squats, there are no muscle cramps. *Just approved for biceps, triceps and thighs.
